Can Gurbani Be Read in Small Portions?

Many of us believe that unless we complete an entire paath (prayer), there’s no benefit. But nowhere has Guru Ji said that only a full reading brings rewards. The true essence of Gurbani lies in making it a natural part of daily life—a Guru’s command that guides us toward inner connection with the Divine.

Life gets busy. Sometimes time is short, health is weak, travel disrupts routines, or unexpected guests arrive. Does that mean we shouldn’t read at all? Not at all! Even four or five ashtpadis of Sukhmani Sahib or two or three pauris of Japji Sahib hold immense value.

The question isn’t how much you read, but how you read it. Ask yourself:

  • One person recites paath five times a day, but their mind wanders.
  • Another reads just four ashtpadis with full focus and devotion.

Who is truly benefiting?

As Guru Nanak Dev Ji teaches, “It’s not about quantity, but the purity of the heart.” In the Guru’s house, what matters is not the count of words, but the sincerity behind them.

So read what you can, but read with presence. Let the Bani live within you, not just on your lips.

Satnam Waheguru. 🙏
