In December 1704, one of history’s most extraordinary last stands unfolded at Chamkaur Sahib—where 40 Khalsa warriors, led by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, held off a Mughal army of 1 million for three days. This wasn’t just a battle; it was a divine test of faith, courage, and the unbreakable Sikh spirit.

The Siege of Chamkaur
After escaping the treachery of Anandpur Sahib, Guru Ji reached Chamkaur with just 40 Singhs, including his two elder sons—Baba Ajit Singh (18) and Baba Jujhar Singh (14). Against them stood the combined might of the Mughal and hill armies, armed with cannons, elephants, and endless soldiers.
The Immortal Sacrifice
- Baba Ajit Singh Ji, the eldest Sahibzada, fought like a seasoned warrior, cutting through enemy ranks until he fell as a martyr.
- Baba Jujhar Singh Ji, barely a teenager, then sought his father’s blessing to enter the battlefield, declaring: “Permit me, dear father, to go where my brother has gone!” He too fought ferociously until attaining martyrdom.
- Guru Gobind Singh Ji, watching his sons embrace death with smiles, roared: “Here, my sons are both martyred! What more proof is needed of my faith?”
40 vs 1,000,000: A Miracle of Valour
For 72 hours, the 40 Singhs turned the mud fort of Chamkaur into an unconquerable fortress. They:
- Used guerrilla tactics to maximize Mughal casualties
- Fought without food or water, fueled only by faith
- Forced the enemy to retreat repeatedly despite impossible odds
By the third day, only Guru Ji and three Singhs remained. Yet, even then, the Mughals dared not enter the fort directly, proving that true strength lies not in numbers, but in truth (Sat) and divine grace (Waheguru).
The Eternal Legacy
The Battle of Chamkaur wasn’t a defeat—it was a spiritual victory that:
- Inspired the Khalsa to never fear tyranny
- Proved that “Sawa Lakh se Ek Larau” (One Sikh can fight 125,000)
- Cemented Sikhism’s ethos: Death before dishonor, faith above fear
Today, Chamkaur’s soil still whispers their names.
Their sacrifice lives in every Khalsa heartbeat.
