Gurdwara Maltekri Sahib: The secret treasure of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Located about 5 km northeast of Hazur Sahib in Nanded (Maharashtra), Gurdwara Maltekri Sahib holds a fascinating secret—a divine treasure buried by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1512 CE and later revealed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji over 200 years later.

The Hidden Treasure of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited this area (then known as Siddha Nathpuri, Brahmapuri, and Wazirabad), He concealed a spiritual and material treasure (Mal) at this elevated spot (Tekri). To protect it, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji appointed Fakir Lakdar Shah, a devoted guardian who watched over the treasure for decades, receiving two gold coins daily as sustenance.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Revelation

In 1708 CE, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji arrived in Nanded with his Khalsa forces, the Sikhs requested their due wages before returning home. Guru Ji then revealed the secret:

  • Bhai Daya Singh Ji and Bhai Dharam Singh Ji were sent to retrieve the buried treasure.
  • They loaded it onto bullock carts and mules and brought it to Gurdwara Sri Sangat Sahib, where Guru Ji distributed it generously among the Sikhs.
  • The remaining treasure was reburied at Maltekri, with a prophecy:

“When the Khalsa numbers 96 crores (960 million), this treasure will fund a three-day global langar.”

Destruction & Restoration

  • In 1928, the Gurdwara was demolished by anti-Sikh elements but was rebuilt in 1930 after the Nizam of Hyderabad intervened.
  • Today, the site features a modest structure with a central room and verandah, preserving the legacy of Guru Nanak’s divine foresight.

“The treasure was never just gold—it was a test of faith, patience, and the Guru’s timeless promise.”
