Guru Nanak Dev Ji exposes the hypocrisy of Shah Suhagan

In a village located in present-day Pakistan, there lived a deceptive fakir named Shah Suhagan who exploited the faith of innocent villagers. Claiming to be a great saint, he spread a false belief that Allah would come to meet him in the form of a husband on every full moon night. He would lock himself in a room, decorate a bed, and forbid anyone from entering, all to gain reverence and offerings from the people.

During one of his sacred journeys, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, accompanied by Bhai Mardana Ji, arrived in this village. Observing a large crowd gathered near a house, Guru Ji asked an elderly woman, “Mata Ji, why has such a crowd gathered here?” She explained that Shah Suhagan, a revered fakir, lived there and claimed that Allah visited him every full moon. Curious and concerned, Guru Ji understood the deception at once.

He instructed his companions to send a message to Shah Suhagan saying that someone wished to meet him. In response, the arrogant fakir replied, “I do not grant darshan to anyone—people see me, I do not see them. God is formless, omnipresent; anyone who claims to have seen Him is a liar.”

To reveal the truth, the people opened the door of Shah Suhagan’s room. Inside, they discovered the fakir’s elaborate setup—meant to deceive others into believing he communed with the divine. Upon realizing that it was Guru Nanak Dev Ji who had come to expose him, Shah Suhagan was filled with shame. He fell at Guru Ji’s feet and begged for forgiveness.

Guru Ji compassionately guided him, explaining that the true path to the Divine lies in service, truth, and purity of life—not in deceit or false claims. Touched by Guru Ji’s wisdom, Shah Suhagan accepted his teachings and transformed his ways.

With his message delivered and the fakir reformed, Guru Nanak Dev Ji continued his travels, spreading truth and compassion for the betterment of all humanity. Sat Sri Akal.
