Gurdwara Handi Sahib – A legacy of devotion in Danapur, Bihar

Gurdwara Handi Sahib, located in Danapur near Patna, Bihar, stands as a heartfelt tribute to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and a touching memory from the early life of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. In the year 1728 Bikrami, young Guru Gobind Singh Ji, then just 12 years old, was journeying from Patna Sahib to Anandpur Sahib with Mata Gujri Ji and his family. As a gesture of love and farewell, the Sangat from Patna accompanied them for about 12 miles, reaching a place called Dana Bhar by nightfall.

There, the local Sangat of Danapur received Guru Ji with deep devotion. Among them was an elderly woman named Mata Jasmi, who humbly offered a simple meal to Guru Ji in her old clay pot. Deeply moved by her sincere devotion, Guru Ji not only blessed the Sangat but responded to Mata Jasmi’s request to “stay here always” by proclaiming that his presence and support would be felt there eternally. He blessed the site, saying that the Sangat would flourish and his divine presence would remain.

Following Guru Ji’s blessing, Mata Jasmi transformed her home into a Dharamshala, where she served langar daily by cooking in a handi (clay pot). It is from this act of selfless service that the place came to be known as Handi Sahib. Her son, Panth Da Singh, later donated land to establish a proper Gurdwara at the blessed site.

To this day, the descendants of Mata Jasmi, including Shri Arun Singh and his family, continue the tradition of seva at Gurdwara Handi Sahib, preserving a legacy of humility, devotion, and eternal connection to Guru Ji.
