cWhen Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s family faced brutal separation in 1704 AD—with the siege of Anandpur, the martyrdom of the younger Sahibzade at Sirhind, and the Guru’s own mother passing away—one of Sikhism’s greatest warriors was unaware of these tragedies as they unfolded. Baba Deep Singh Ji, then in his native village of Pahuwind (Amritsar), learned of these events months later due to the slow spread of news in that era.
Why Wasn’t He Present During the Crisis?
- In 1703 AD, Baba Deep Singh’s father, Bhai Bhagta Ji, visited Anandpur Sahib and sought Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s permission to take his son back to Punjab for a brief period. The Guru consented.
- Back home, Baba Ji immersed himself in teaching Gurmukhi and spreading Sikh teachings, preparing the community spiritually.
The Heartbreaking Delay
When Anandpur was besieged (1704) and the Guru’s family scattered:
- With no instant communication, word traveled slowly through messengers and travelers.
- By the time Baba Deep Singh learned of the Sarhand massacre (where the Sahibzade were bricked alive) and Mata Gujri Ji’s passing, the wounds were already fresh in the Sikh psyche.
His Response: A Warrior’s Resolve
Though he couldn’t be there in time to protect the Guru’s family, Baba Deep Singh channeled his grief into action:
- He intensified his preaching of Gurbani, fortifying Sikhs’ faith.
- Later, he would avenge these tragedies on the battlefield, famously fighting headless at Amritsar in 1757 to liberate Harmandir Sahib from desecration.
