The panj pyare: The five beloved ones who shaped the Khalsa Panth

Today, we honor the Panj Pyare—the five fearless souls who rewrote the destiny of Sikhism by sacrificing everything at Guru Ji’s call. On the sacred day of Baisakhi in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Khalsa Panth in Sri Anandpur Sahib. In a moment that changed history, the Guru asked for five heads—and from the crowd, five brave men from different faiths, castes, and regions stepped forward without hesitation.

Let us remember these legendary warriors:

  • Bhai Daya Singh Ji, born on 1 February 1668 in Lahore.
  • Bhai Dharam Singh Ji, born on 12 April 1670 in Hastinapur, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Bhai Himmat Singh Ji, born in May 1664 in Puri, Odisha.
  • Bhai Mohkam Singh Ji, born on 7 March 1679 in Dwarka, Gujarat.
  • Bhai Sahib Singh Ji, born on 3 November 1675 in Karnataka.

When Guru Ji prepared the Amrit (sacred nectar), these five became the first to receive it—and in a powerful act of humility, Guru Gobind Singh Ji Himself then took Amrit from their hands. This was not just a ritual; it was a revolution. It marked the birth of a new era—one of equality, courage, and unwavering faith.
