The Defeat of the Arrogance of the Five Arrogant Peers

The Defeat of the Arrogance of the Five Arrogant Peers

During his travels (Udasis), Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived in Sirsa, where a gathering of Muslim fakirs was taking place. Among them were five proud Pirs, who grew jealous when the locals were drawn to Guru Ji’s divine wisdom and Bhai Mardana Ji’s soulful rabab music.

The Challenge of the Pirs

  • The Pirs, angered by Guru Nanak’s message of “No Hindu, No Muslim—only Truth”, tried to intimidate Him with their miracles.
  • When their powers failed, they challenged Guru Ji to a 40-day penance (chilla)—believing He would fail.

Guru Nanak’s Triumph of Truth

  • While the Pirs performed rigid rituals, Guru Ji simply meditated on Naam (God’s Name).
  • After 40 days, the Pirs—exhausted and humbled—fell at Guru Ji’s feet, admitting defeat.
  • Guru Ji forgave them and taught:
“True devotion isn’t in miracles, but in surrendering ego and worshipping the One Creator.”

The Legacy of the Pirs’ Transformation

  • The Pirs abandoned hypocrisy and embraced Sikhi’s universal truth.
  • This event became a testament to Guru Nanak’s spiritual supremacy and His mission to unite humanity beyond religious labels.

“When arrogance challenges Truth, only humility remains standing.”
