Why did the Monk refuse to eat Ordinary Food?

One day, Guru Ramdas Ji was seated with his congregation near Amritsar when a sadhu arrived and requested food. With warmth and love, Guru Ji invited him to partake in the langar, the community kitchen. However, the sadhu declined, saying, “I do not eat ordinary food. I seek a special kind of sacred food.”

Curious and humble, Guru Ramdas Ji asked, “What kind of food do you desire?” The sadhu responded, “I wish to eat food that has not been seen by anyone’s eyes and is entirely pure and sacred.”

Guru Ji smiled gently and replied, “Such food can only exist in the womb of a mother.” Hearing this, the sadhu was struck by Guru Ji’s profound wisdom and humility. He admitted, “Your insight and humility are unmatched. You have shattered my ego.”

With compassion, Guru Ramdas Ji then fed the sadhu and shared a deeper truth: a genuine sadhu is one who accepts all food without conditions or discrimination. This, he explained, is the essence of true spirituality and life.
