Biography of Satinder Sartaj

Satinder Pal Singh, also known as Satinder Sartaaj, is an Indian singer, songwriter, poet, actor primarily connected with Punjabi films and songs. He gained fame with the song “Sai”. Since then he has performed across the globe. In 2017, Sartaaj made the movie debut as Maharaja Duleep Singh in The Black Prince.

Satinder Pal Singh was born in the Bajrawar village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. He attended school at the gov. elementary school in the village. While in the third class, he started performing in local Bal Sabhas.

Education

Satinder Sartaaj has obtained an honours degree in music from Govt. College, Hoshiarpur. He concentrated on the musical career while completing the MPhil in Sufi music singing and later a PhD in Sufi singing (Gayan) from Punjab University, Chandigarh. He taught music at Punjab University for some years. Satinder Sartaaj completed a Diploma and certificate course in the Persian language. He has started writing poetry and adopted his Takhallus (pen name), Sartaaj, while at college.

Career

Satinder Sartaaj has pursued a professional music career in his 20s. Before this, he stated he was a farmer and had no interest in pursuing a career as a performer.

His big performance break was in 2008 when he got booked for a gig in Toronto, Ontario. The show’s organisers had heard him singing on YouTube and required him to perform for the Punjabi-Canadian audience.

In 2011, at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards, Satinder Sartaaj won Best International Act.

On 2 May 2014, Sartaaj performed in the Royal Albert Hall. He literally won Best Songwriter at BAMA 2017 and BAMA Music Video of the Year 2018 for Udaarian.

He had debuted in the American film organisation with the lead role in the movie The Black Prince, a historic biopic of Maharaja Duleep Singh which released on 21 July 2017. He has acted in Punjabi films including Kali Jotta (2023)and Ikko Mikke (2020).

Although he taught at the university and is the accomplished bhangra performer, composer and singer, Sartaaj considers shayari (poetry) as the foremost love.

Satinder Sartaaj is a pretty rare singer who is highly qualified, having earned a Doctorate. While most movie singers and folk singers in India are not known for their educational qualifications, Satinder Sartaaj is one of the younger crop of singers who have gone through the rigors of formal education. Satinder Sartaaj obtained a degree in Music from Hoshiarpur Government College. Satinder Sartaaj has concentrated on his Sufi musical career having done a Ph.D in Sufi singing (gayan) from Panjab University, Chandigarh and later M. Phil in Sufi music singing. Satinder Sartaaj taught music at Punjab University. Satinder completed a Diploma and Certificate Course in Persian language. It was in college, when he started writing poetry and adopted his Takhallus (poetic name) Sartaaj. Satinder Sartaaj got married on 9 December 2010.

Talking about Satinder Sartaaj schooling from its own village and closeby villages of Patti and Chabbewal, he says, ” Satinder Sartaaj started performing at the Bal-Sabha in 3rd grade and this marked the starting of the journey. Satinder Sartaaj then graduated in Music with Honours from Gov. College Hoshiarpur. Alongside Satinder Sartaaj completed his 5-year diploma in classical music from Jalandhar, Sangeet Vishard. After completing his diploma and graduation Satinder headed to Punjab University, Chandigarh for its Masters in Music. After his Master’s, he completed his Ph.D. with a specialization and Sufi poetry. To further understand the Sufi poetry, Satinder completed a Diploma in Persian (Farsi) language and certificate course. Dr. Satinder Sartaaj taught in the Punjab University Music Department for 6 years.
