The Divine Sacrifice: Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s Lesson to Mian Mir

When the renowned Sufi saint Mian Mir visited Guru Arjan Dev Ji during those final, painful days, what he saw brought tears to his eyes. The Guru’s body was covered in blisters, with wounds weeping pus from the brutal torture inflicted by Emperor Jahangir’s orders. Heartbroken, Mian Mir begged, “Let me go to Jahangir – I’ll secure your freedom and see your tormentors punished!”

With calm grace, Guru Ji simply said, “Look up.”

When Mian Mir raised his eyes, he gasped – celestial beings filled the sky, awaiting permission to strike down the oppressors. Stunned, he asked, “If you command such power, why endure this suffering?”

Guru Ji’s reply revealed profound truths: “I bear this pain as an example for all who meditate on God’s Name, so they never waver in hardship or blame the Divine. True faith is tested through suffering – without such examples, ordinary hearts would falter.”

He continued, “If those with power don’t defend righteousness, how can the powerless remain steadfast? Those who could act but don’t become religion’s enemies in God’s eyes. Remember – the body feels pain but perishes; the soul is eternal. To break nature’s laws with divine power would only feed the ego, the greatest mistake of all.”

In that moment, Mian Mir understood – this wasn’t weakness, but the ultimate spiritual teaching. Sat Sri Akal.
